Fight Back

An important message from Jose Ramos
Volunteer Chair, Relay For Life, California Division

California Division Relay For Life Volunteers,

The work you do through Relay For Life on behalf of the American Cancer Society is extraordinary. Each year, you collectively mobilize nearly 200,000 volunteers throughout California to fight back against cancer, and in the process, raise $30 million to fund the lifesaving research, education, advocacy, and service programs that benefit our families, friends, and fellow citizens. You do this work because you know that your efforts make a difference, and because you believe that we all must take an active role in this fight.

The results of your work are clear. Each year, we see reductions in cancer incidence and mortality rates. We see improved quality of life for cancer survivors. We see more of the people we care about celebrating more birthdays. You make all that possible, and you should be proud of your efforts.

Generating $30 million per year gets us closer to the end of our fight. But what if there were an opportunity to grow our impact over tenfold - to over $500 million each year, fully dedicated to cancer research and control programs within California. That kind of impact is unprecedented in any state, but we as Californians have the opportunity to do just that and set an example for the rest of the nation.

The California Cancer Research Act is the answer, and we need all of your help to make it happen.

At the link below, Tim Gibbs, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network's Director of Field Advocacy, is announcing the start of a signature gathering drive to place this important piece of legislation on the November 2010 ballot. To do that, we need to collect 100,000 signatures as the American Cancer Society's contribution toward qualifying the initiative.

II am asking all Relay For Life volunteers in California to help with this drive. If you care about fighting cancer, there has never been a greater opportunity to dramatically impact the course of the disease. Think about the potential this amount of funding would have on progress toward finding a cure. Think about how many lives this could impact. Think about the reason you became involved in the fight against cancer. You want to end the threat as fast as possible, and this is a way to do it.

It won't happen without you. Please click on the link below to sign up for a signature shift or to have someone contact you. Share the invitation with your family and friends. Come November, let's make sure make sure we have the opportunity to make history in the fight against cancer. Thanks for all you do to make our world cancer-free.

ACS CAN is the nation’s leading cancer advocacy organization that is working every day to make cancer issues a national priority. Many of the most important decisions about cancer are made outside of your doctor’s office. Instead, they are made by your state legislature, in Congress and in the White House. ACS CAN empowers regular people to be part of the growing national movement that is fighting back against cancer.

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy partner of the American Cancer Society, is holding lawmakers accountable for their words and their actions. We demand that our leaders not only talk about fighting cancer but take real steps toward decreasing the number of people suffering and dying from cancer.

Don't put it off ... join today!!! Complete the Membership Form and turn it in at a Committee or Team Captain meeting, or mail it to our local ACS office.
